Echo, the Deaf Pittie Mix

Pit Bull Pride - Day #25

Echo is a 3 ½ year old American Pit Bull Terrier mix. He was born into the shelter life, but was quickly pulled, along with his entire family, to be placed into foster care with the Mendocino Coast Humane Society.

Despite facing a stack of odds that were against him, Echo was adopted into his forever home at 5 months old, and this sweet boy has been living the good life since.

Not only is Echo a pit bull mix (the mix of breed most often killed in shelters across the country) but he is deaf. Deaf puppies can be hard to identify in a litter because they compensate so well for their lack of hearing by being extremely visually aware. Echo learned to watch the other puppies and quickly joined in!

Echo is a busy boy for sure! He has been to countless training classes, from basic to advanced obedience. People are often shocked to learn that he cannot hear, and even more so they are shocked to learn that he is so easily trained! After passing several basic obedience classes, Echo began rally, agility and his very favorite, Disc! He took to the Frisbee like a duck to water. Echo learned at a young age to watch for instruction and since has learned over 30 hand signals. Echo has even passed his Canine Good Citizenship test.. TWICE!

His visual awareness has really come into play when chasing his disc. Since he cannot hear, Echo is not distracted in the same way that dogs with full hearing abilities can be, which is especially beneficial to him when he is competing. Without the noise of the crowd to distract him, Echo is completely focused on his disc.

If his mom comes home and he is sleeping, Echo stays asleep. He doesn't pay attention to other barking dogs and loud noises do not bother him one bit! The best part is, Echo has no idea that he is deaf!

Echo has also been to several parades, given demos locally and has been featured in American Dog Magazine. He was also a co-star in the Pit Bull Photo Book by Melissa McDaniel, sharing space with his hero, Wallace the Pit Bull. Echo loves an audience and is always ready to be the center of attention!

Echo’s family also fosters for Daisy Davis Pit Bull Rescue. His house is always overflowing with pets, both permanent and foster! Besides Echo, there is Puck (an Aussie mix), Sweet Pea (a foster failure) Mattie, a horse and 26 free range chickens!

Echo is an inspiration for rescued dogs everywhere, showcasing that rescue dogs are not broken and will always be willing to share their joy!
