Donuts, donuts and more donuts!

The title of this post may be a little misleading, Holly only had one donut, but oh boy, did she love it!

Last month, we received the news that our girl has cancer. Due to the location, surgery isn't an option at this point, so we are committed to making her final days - however many she may have - as comfortable and as fun as possible!

The Worst News...

Cancer. It felt like a punch when our Veterinarian confirmed the diagnosis we feared. Looking down at Holly's nervous eyes as we sat in the exam room at the clinic, I fought back tears as Dr. B went over our options and shared her knowledge about this terrible disease. Expectations. Signs of pain. A timeline for survival. It all seemed so surreal.

It was only a few weeks earlier, after playing fetch in the yard, as we do on a daily basis, I noticed a small scrape on Holly's chin. Believing that she had caught herself on the deck or scratched herself on a stick, it wasn't much of a worry until the bump persisted for a week or so. Knowing that she may need some antibiotics to kick an infection if that were the case, we stopped in for a visit with Dr. B. She worried that it could be something more, so we biopsied this annoyance. The biopsy showed nothing, so antibiotics were given and we went about our day. Fast forward to a week into the antibiotic treatment, the small lump began to noticeably grow, so we stopped by for a recheck. Fearing that the previous biopsy had missed something, we ran a second test and had it sent out for a more in depth culture. This culture confirmed the worst. Cancer.

Holly - 1 month after her diagnosis. The tumor on her chin
has grown to about 1/2 a ping pong ball size.
Mast Cell tumors are not uncommon in dogs, particularly in breeds like Staffordshire Terriers, which Holly is a mix of. After speaking about our options, we decided surgery was the best option to remove this tumor, so we scheduled our surgery for 5 days later. On day 4, Holly woke up with a tennis ball sized lump in her throat and swelling up and down her chest. We immediately contacted Dr. B and Dr. T, who opened up their schedules to get us in immediately. At this point, we realized how aggressive this tumor had become. Her lymph nodes were highly inflamed and it was confirmed that the disease had already spread further than the surgery could cure.  We spoke about our options and treatment plans, and left with more information than we knew how to handle.

After speaking with several veterinarians, friends who have experienced a similar diagnosis and searching our own souls to decide what was right for Holly, we were left with two options. Chemotherapy, which has a low chance of helping to extend her life by more than a few months or a treatment plan that focuses on her quality of life and ensuring that she is pain-free for whatever time she has left. We chose the latter and are committed to ensuring that or here out, every day is the best day for our Holly-girl.

So now, as I sit outside, with Holly happily kicking the cushions off of our patio furniture (one of her favorite things to do - she is an odd one), I am reflecting on the amazing 10 years we have had together. The only hard part of owning a dog is saying goodbye. Holly had a rough start to life before we adopted her, so now, as our promise to her, she will have the best last few months any dog could ever dream of.

Photography sessions with Stephanie

Photography is one of my very favorite art forms! Not only do I have the chance to create beautiful photos, my clients are always adorable! Sure, it can be challenging to get a pup to sit still, but it's an extremely fun challenge.

I like to keep my photography sessions simple and easy, which I believe makes for the most beautiful photos. Rather than having tons of props, I focus on the pets themselves. Sure, sometimes we put them in a cute flower collar or bow-tie, but overall, my photos are clean and bright. My clients tend to agree that this style suits me and really brings out the true personalities of the pets that I photograph.

While many photographers charge an additional fee to have access to your photos, each of my photo sessions includes full access to your high resolution digital images. Should you choose to have prints made, I offer reasonable rates for professional printing. I'm not here to add fees later on, I simply want to create beautiful photos that you will love forever!

For the next couple of weeks, I will be offering a Texas Bluebonnet themed sessions. These are limited for only a few weeks as the wildflowers are in full bloom! If you live in the Austin area and would like to set up a flower-session, shoot me an email to service@petstudioart.com!

Happy Birthday Holly!!

We had a blast in San Francisco last week. San Francisco is a city full of excitement, love, art and beautiful scenery. Honestly, the only place I would rather be is right here at home in Austin with my own pups. Of course, I enjoyed meeting random pets while we were on vacation, but there is nothing like the dog scene in Austin.

Of course, after spending a week in wine-country, we certainly didn't want to jump right back into working as soon as we got home, so we decided to celebrate a belated 5th birthday for my little Pittie mix, Holly with a day at our favorite dog-friendly Austin spots!

Our first stop was Red's Porch, a super dog-friendly restaurant bar in South Austin. They host a delicious mimosa for a morning drink and a complimentary bowl of water for the pup! Holly developed a crush on our waiter and spent the morning play-bowing as he walked by. I think she almost fainted for joy when he finally got a chance to stop and love on her.

Our next stop was Woof Gang Bakery, a doggy deli where we scooped up a tasty treat for Holly. She chose a pink cake of course because that is our signature color! Yes, I took pictures of her devouring her cake - why not? I see babies with cake on their face all the time and Holly certainly is my child! :-)

After Holly's snack, we decided to stop by my favorite spot in Austin, Icenhauer's bar on Rainy Street where Holly enjoyed dumping out bowls of water and rolling around in mud. Since we were so early and the place was empty, the staff didn't mind and Holly certainly enjoyed herself - although, my car was nice and muddy after the ride home. After a couple of drinks, we stopped by Bangers Sausage and Beer for dinner. Now, I know what you are thinking... Isn't Stephanie and Vegetarian?? Yes! I am and I enjoyed a delicious Veggie Sausage (go Bangers for having Veggie options!) while watching pups play in the dog park outside. Holly isn't as dog-friendly as I would like, unfortunately, so she watched from our table but had fun nonetheless. (We call Holly dog un-sure as she gets nervous with dogs that are too in-her-face. As a responsible dog-owner, I know her limits and will certainly keep her out of a situation that could potentially turn ugly).

After dinner, we decided to go for a stroll by Town Lake and enjoy a gorgeous sunset across the water. By the end of the day, not only was Holly a tired out pup, but we were all ready to curl up for the night!

Hiking with Holly

My family all lives about 3 hours away, in Houston, so when they are anywhere near Austin, I am always thrilled to be able to spend some quality time with them!

This weekend, my parents decided to go camping at Inks Lake, only 45 minutes or so away from my house. So, we loaded up Holly, packed a lunch and headed out for a day in the wilderness! Okay, maybe not the wilderness, but it certainly seems like we are out in the wild compared to what I am usually doing, locking myself into my art studio and painting!

Holly had a blast! Plus, I always love being having her spend time with my dad, as he is still wary of pit bull type dogs. Holly is a great little advocate for my dad, she is small and un-intimidating, plus she doesn't take no for an answer she she wants to give kisses!

We went for a long hike, where Holly sniffed everything we passed. She had so much fun chasing leaves and really loved all of the great big sticks that she could find!

This was Holly's first camping outing, but she loved it so much, it certainly won't be her last!

Celebrate your Pit Bull!

Today marks the beginning of Pit Bull Awareness Month! For most Pit Bull lovers, every month is a time to celebrate our pups, but this month, we are lucky enough to be able to see festivals, parties and parades happening all over the country in celebration of our beloved breed!

Since I can't host a festival online, I decided to celebrate my love of Pit Bulls and all Bully Breed dogs by sharing their stories here on my blog! All month, you will be reading stories and seeing photos of Pit Bulls that have entered my life!

Of course, to kick things off, I had to share my own pittie love, miss Holly Madison! Yes, she is named after Holly Madison, star of Peepshow and The Girls Next Door and yes, my Holly also looks great in pink!

Holly was brought into one of my local shelters at only six weeks old. She was in terrible condition, skinny and scared. Sadly, her former owner was a terrible individual. He or she decided that they no longer wanted to keep Holly's little family and literally threw her mother along with a box full of the puppies out of a moving truck on a rural Williamson County Road. Sadly the mother was already passed when a good Samaritan who had seen the box of puppies being tossed from the truck stopped. According to the Veterinarian on staff, Holly's mother had probably passed sometime in the days before they were found. Maybe her former owner just didn't know what to do with the mother, but sadly his/her decision to toss the puppies cost three of Holly's siblings their lives.

Luckily, the staff on hand went right to work and within a couple of days, the three puppies that survived were nursed back to health and able to be placed for adoption. When I met Holly, it was love at first site and while I postponed bringing her home, my husband (then boyfriend) woke up the morning after we met her and decided that we had to go back to bring her home to stay.

Holly was a great puppy. She was potty trained within 2 weeks and has never had an accident inside, other than a few exceptions when she has been sick. She is playful and happy, although she has had anxiety issues since the day she came home. We work with her no a regular basis, spending time exploring new things and learning new tricks. Her favorite pastimes are swimming and agility, both of which have made huge impacts on her overall confidence levels!

Stephanie & Holly share a smooch!
When Holly is feeling happy, everyone knows it, especially our two kitties, Jazz and Izze Belle. Holly adores our cats and I think if she would fit, she would curl up with them in the sunny spots on our windowsill.

Though she sometimes drives me crazy, I cant imagine my life without Holly. She is a great friend and a wonderful pup!

...and they prefer the basket!

I adore my two kitties. They are easy going, fairly neat and both are very affectionate and friendly with both us and our guests! Pretty much the perfect cats! So, naturally, I want to spoil them with toys and treats. This morning, I set out their basket filled with kitty toys, balls with bells in them, squeaky toys, little fuzzy mice and catnip filled toys... but as cats can do, they both blatantly ignored my offering. So, I thought to myself, I will just leave them out and let them play when they are ready....

So, I go to work (in my office, just a room away), forgetting about the basket of fun that I left out for the kitties. A few minutes later, I hear lots of jingling and toy tossing. I imagine they are just around the corner having the best time! I can picture the kitties chasing the balls and carrying the mice around. So, I get my camera ready, hoping to capture the kitties having a great time and as I turn the corner... I see Jazz, cuddled up and snoozing.... in the basket where the toys were.

Jazz enjoying the basket where we keep the kitty toys...
...and just a few steps away, a very guilty pooch (Miss Holly Madison) having a blast with the kitty toys! At least someone got some joy out of the toys! :-)

She's 'Just a Dog'... and You are 'Just a Person'...

Nothing irritates me more than the question, "Why are you doing so much for 'just a dog'?" -Stephanie Conrad, artist www.petstudioart.com
Stephanie & 'Holly Madison'  |  www.whozurdoggie.com
To some people, rescue is confusing. They don't understand why we put so much effort into each dog that comes into our lives.  They see these loving four legged creatures as a nuisance, property or 'things' that are really unnecessary in the grand scheme of their lives. Personally, these people make me sad. Not only are they obviously heartless (who doesn't love a puppy or a kitten?!?) but they are missing out on what I consider one of the best pieces of my life.

So I say to those individuals:

"To you, she is 'just a dog'. She is never going to cure cancer. She is never going to be a super hero or save a baby from a burning building (although there are many other dogs that have done so...). She is never going to win a Grammy or star in the next hit film. She is never going to be more than 'just a dog'....... but that is perfect because being a dog is exactly what I expect from her.

She will slobber on my feet as soon as I walk through the door. She will destroy many toys and spread white cotton stuffing all over my living room. She will absolutely have an accident in the house and I'm sure I will step barefoot in that cold puddle on the floor before I see it. She will track mud all over my freshly mopped kitchen and leave pawprints all over my new white shirt.

She will lick away my tears when I am sad and cuddle with me when I am sick. She will dedicate herself to me and shower me with adoring looks and wags so happy and fast that they knock her off her feet. She will rely on me to provide her with a loving home, full of kisses and hugs. She will know that she is loved and will never need to worry where her next meal will come from.  She will never worry that she is going to be left at a shelter when her family moves away or be chained to a tree for her whole life because her family doesn't want her to play in their garden. She will never worry that she will be neglected, abused or forgotten because to me, she is so much more than 'just a dog'... she is MY dog.

Chances are, YOU are not going to be the next Grammy winner or cure cancer. Chances are, you are going to be an average human being, which is exactly what I would expect from you. Being average doesn't make you unspecial... it just makes you... you. A person that deserves to be loved and treated with respect, just as my dog does.  To you, she is 'just a dog'... just as you are 'just a person'.

So the next time you want to ask why I care so much about 'just a dog'... ask yourself why your loved ones care so much about 'just a person' like you."

Holly Madison... My little Pawcasso!

This week has been especially stressful. With the wildfires surrounding Austin, it's hard to find a moment without worry or stress. Enter Holly Madison, the silliest Pit mix around!

Dogs are so in tune with our emotions, my little girl could tell that I needed some extra love yesterday. While I was cooped up in the house, we decided to do a very special custom painting. This time, Holly was the artist!
I can admit, she may not be the neatest painter around, but she certainly is cute! Holly will be donating her "Rainbow" to Rainbow Diamond's Art for Rescue's Auction! Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the rescue of the Doggy Artist's choice. Holly's donation will go to Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas!
