Cat becomes friends with a window washer and it's adorable!

Our cats are so incredibly entertaining! They are sweet, silly and as you can see with this high-rise dwelling kitty, they love to make new friends! Not only does this cat enjoy playing with the squeegee, the window washer is equally entertained!

Fabulous Felines!

Walter - Adopted!
Now that 2016 is officially here, I have finally had a break from the chaos of Christmas. My clients are amazing and I wouldn't trade the crazy last months of the year for anything, but I do miss my volunteer time each week since I have to focus on work and can't give away my free time as usual. Of course, now that I have a few hours a week, I love giving that time to my favorite shelter, the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter. Not only does this shelter work hard to provide a clean, friendly environment for both the animals in their care and potential adopters walking through the door, but we have continued to save well over 90% of the animals that end up at the shelter for the last 5 - yes FIVE - years!

WCRAS is an open admission shelter, which means we take in ANY domestic animals (that also includes pigs, goats and even chickens from time to time) that come through our door. This is no small feat. Last year, the shelter took in 2929 cats and not a single cat was euthanized for space. This all despite having a huge spike in intake this summer when dozens of cats were brought in from multiple hoarding situations.
I am so incredibly proud to work with such a great shelter with such beautiful people - both staff and volunteers!

Oscar, the Bionic Cat

My sweet Jazz-cat!
Just over a month ago, my sweet little black kitty Jazz had emergency surgery due to a blockage in his intestine. As scary as that was, there was never a thought that we wouldn't do everything possible to ensure that our handsome boy had the best care possible. Thanks to our wonderful Veterinary team, Dr Stein (who performed the surgery) and Dr Bryant at Parmer Lane Pet Hospital in Cedar Park, TX, Jazz has made a full recovery and is back to his happy, sweet self!

When I came across the story of Oscar, he just reminded me of my Jazz. Not because my Jazz is missing a limb, but because they have the same sweet demeanor, they look alike (the obvious similarity) and they have both overcome a lot of odds. Jazz was adopted from a shelter in Austin, before our city was No-Kill. A little black kitten blends in with the hundreds of other black kittens that enter our shelters yearly, we happen to have been lucky enough to be chosen by this little one! Jazz reached through his kennel and grabbed my shoelace as we passed - as I looked down to see what had stopped me, it was love at first sight!

Oscar's hind legs were severed between his ankles and feet by a harvester in a corn field near his home. Oscar somehow managed to get out of the corn field, where he was discovered by a passing cyclist, who scooped him up and carried him back to his families home. Oscar was covered in blood, and his owners Mike and Kate feared that he would need to be humanely euthanized at their local veterinarian. Fortunately, Dr. Peter  Haworth saw past his initial wounds and after administering medication and ensuring that Oscar was not in any pain, suggested that Oscar would make an excellent candidate for prosthetic legs.

Oscar was flown to the United Kingdom where he underwent his surgery with Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick. The surgery was successful and Oscar is now well loved and living life as any cat should!

A Fresh Start for HSNBA

Judge Judy, available for adoption!
The rain was pouring down on my drive to the rural animal shelter located in New Braunfels, Texas. A few weeks earlier, I had arranged with a volunteer, Linda to come out and offer my help in photographing a few of the pets that are available for adoption. The day wasn't looking great and I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. This was the first photo shoot I have done where I was without my usual team of volunteers and would be relying solely on a small group of volunteers who I had never met beyond our few emails back and forth. When it comes to saving lives, however, an hour and a half drive seemed like a small price to pay and I was willing to give it a chance.

I arrived to the shelter nearly 30 minutes early, this gave me a few moments to step inside and take everything in before we set up for the photo shoot. I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the shelter and quickly glanced around to see kennels of well-rested cats, alongside a small greeting room, where later in the day, we would see two kittens adopted!

Camus, adopted shortly after our
photo shot! Woohoo!
Within just a few minutes, I was greeted by the new shelter director, Sarah, who took her position in January after working within the city of Austin and helping to develop the phenomenal foster program that plays a huge part in keeping Austin a No Kill city. Sarah proudly gave me a tour of the facility, pointing out important areas of the shelter, like the intake room, which has dramatically changed the way animals are treated upon intake. Before, animals were simply brought into the shelter without any organization, which frustratingly resulted in animals being lost in the system or being put into the general population of pets without vaccinations. Now, the intake room exists with purpose and order, a room to take a moment upon arrival, vaccinate and put the animal into the shelter computer system. This ensures that each animal is documented and accounted for, a simple, but extremely important process in keeping an organized shelter.

Our fabulous group of volunteers!
After the tour, I was introduced to Linda, the volunteer who had reached out to me last year to help with a small ad that she wanted to place in a local paper, this ad, along with her persistence with the city council ultimately resulted in the hiring of Sarah, and along with that life-saving changes that will eventually save every healthy, adoptable animal at the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area.

After our introductions, Linda and I decided to get set up for our photo shoot. The goal was to photograph as many dogs and cats as we could fit into a 4 hour period. Happily, the volunteers all arrived and we got started. While the volunteers took turns taking pups out of their kennels, letting them have a potty break and then jumping in line for photos, I set up shot under the front overhang of the shelter. While the rain poured down all around us, I was able to photograph dozens of dogs. (I would have loved to have a variety of backgrounds, but unfortunately, the rain kept us on the porch and we could not enjoy any of the greenery that surrounded the shelter). After only 2 hours, we had photographed every dog in the shelter that we were able to (a few dogs were not yet off of stray hold or had not yet had their vaccinations, so we were, sadly, unable to photograph those pups).

Bellatrix, available for adoption!
After a sweet little break, where we brainstormed marketing ideas, we said goodbye to the wonderful volunteers and Linda and I took the next 30 minutes to setup a time to photograph the shelter cats. I found this shelter particularly wonderful in that they separate the male and female cat populations. In my opinion (and I work with a lot of cats) this results in happier cats, which translated into my photo shoot. The cat session breezed by and before our 4 hours were up, we had photographed a total of 70 animals for the Humane Society!

As I packed up my equipment to say goodbye, I took one last little walk through the shelter, thinking of where they currently are in their journey to No Kill. As a regular volunteer for the Williamson County Regional Shelter, I have become accustomed to success. We regularly save 95%+ of the animals that walk through our doors. It's a completely different view as a volunteer, knowing that the dog I see today will still be alive and well tomorrow, with very little risk (yes, we have bad months where we are full and in desperate need of adoptions) of being killed for space. While, New Braunfels is not yet at that point, seeing a shelter staff and volunteers full of hope is heartwarming.

Domino, available for adoption!
Over the last few years, this shelter has had a rough reputation. In 2012, the shelter was saving less than 25% of all animals impounded (50% of the dogs and well under 10% of the cats that entered the shelter). Although things have improved over the last two years, the save rate in 2014 still lingered around 42%. Now, in just a few short months (she took her position on January 12th), Sarah along with her staff and volunteers, is already saving 59% of the animals in the shelter. While there is still a long way to go, a 17% increase in life-saving efforts in just 4.5 months is amazing!

According to Sarah, the biggest change at the shelter is simple, "The community is starting to recognize that it's a brand new day at HSNBA and they are excited to get involved!"

With community involvement comes awareness, which is why volunteers are so important to the success of any shelter. Volunteers are the individuals that can run the programs the shelter cannot yet afford. Volunteers like Linda, who stepped up and reached out to me to help out, and who was willing to take the steps in running ads to promote a change within the shelter.

Doug, one of the three resident free-
roaming cats.
"I didn't volunteer at the shelter before Sarah was hired because of the resistance to the changes I was advocating. Now, we have a true leader. Sarah has an enthusiasm in leading the way to save more lives at the shelter. She has started a blog to keep the public informed and overall has created transparency at the shelter. She is very frank about the current realities and needs at the shelter, and yet she is full of optimism and plans for the future." -Linda, shelter volunteer and founder of No Kill New Braunfels.

Although I have only visited the shelter once, just meeting and getting to know the current staff and volunteers, I could already sense the positive vibes in the air. I feel like every staff member and volunteer made a point to say hello and let me know how important the photo shoot was to them. It's a small thing, but showed me that everyone was involved in the day to day activity of the shelter and wants to see the pets get their shot at a loving home.

My biggest question - what's next for the shelter? Obviously, the long-term goal is to end the killing and become a No Kill shelter, however, the reality is that before that happens, there is a lot of work to do. Sarah shared her short-term goals with me, which first and foremost include getting a TNR and low-cost Spay/Neuter clinic running. This would ensure that all animals are spayed and neutered before leaving the shelter. At this time, they currently have adoption contracts which state the owners will have their new pet's spayed/neutered after they are adopted.

Michele, a sweet, shy girl who was
so happy to be offered love and
attention from the volunteers.
HSNBA is an open admission shelter and at any given time is home to approximately 100 cats and 100 dogs, they handle close to 5000 animals per year. According to Sarah, one of the biggest challenges the shelter faces is lack of Veterinary care. As is the case with most shelters, they cannot afford to hire a Veterinarian, this means that on many occasions, they are forced to make the decision between euthanasia or contracting with a local Veterinarian for care, which they may or may not be able to afford at the time. The revenue the shelter receives from the City of New Braunfels and Comal County covers approximately 3 days of care for each pet. If a pet remains in the shelter for longer than 3 days (which most do), the remainder of their care is covered by donations.

I left the shelter feeling sad for their current battle, but happy knowing that the shelter is working to end the killing and move forward. The past is the past - they truly are making a fresh start and I feel so proud to have helped in my own small way.

So many cats!!!

Rita, one of the 80+ Shadow Cats posing with her portrait!
If you have been following my work for awhile (thank you for that by the way!), you know that I love cats. I really love cats! I share my home with two beautiful kitties, Jazz and Izze Belle and spend the majority of my volunteer time photographing cats.

My husband and I foster kittens, usually young mothers who are nursing their babies and of course, I have lots of kitty painting-clients!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of visiting one of my favorite rescue organizations, Shadow Cats. You may remember that I did a fundraiser with Shadow Cats last October where we raised almost $700 for their sanctuary program.

During that fundraiser, I was able to share the story of Shadow Cats as well as spread the word about their wonderful program. Shadow Cats is unique in that they offer life-time sanctuary to special needs cats. While they do offer adoptions, the majority of the Shadow Cats live their entire lives at the sanctuary, where they are incredibly loved and pampered. This is a beautiful program and a rescue that I deeply admire.

On Friday, May 29th, Shadow Cats will host a very special visitor, Jackson Galaxy of the Animal Planet show 'My Cat from Hell'. Jackson is one of the world's best cat behaviorists and overall just an awesome guy. He has been to Austin a few times and publicly offers his support for Shadow Cats and their sanctuary program.

You can get tickets to meet Jackson and the awesome folks behind the scenes with Shadow Cats by visiting their website

While I was visiting Shadow Cats, I spoke with a few volunteers, all of which have been with Shadow Cats for years (they truly have an amazing dedicated team) about the upcoming event. They shared stories of the sanctuary cats as well as their thoughts on Jackson himself. Everyone had amazingly nice things to say and particularly were struck at his soft approach at the sanctuary. On his show, Jackson may seem loud and boisterous, however in person, he comes across as calm and very much in control. This translates incredibly well to the cats and he gave the team wonderful advice on making sanctuary life even better for the Shadow Cat felines!

I am, of course, wishing Shadow Cats the absolute best in their upcoming event and sending a huge Thank You to Jackson Galaxy for sharing his love of cats with our Austin community!

Shadow Cats: An Upcoming Fundraiser

Wylie
When choosing rescues to work with for a monthly fundraiser, a lot goes on behind the scenes. I usually spend about a month preparing for each fundraiser as well as really researching the ins and outs of the rescues that I will be raising donations for.

Last week, I confirmed with Shadow Cats Rescue that they will be my featured organization for the month of November - a wonderful month to offer holiday gifts AND raise funds for kitties in need! As with every rescue I work with, I really wanted to take some extra time to get to know the pets in their care. Fortunately, Shadow Cats sanctuary is local (their Veterinarian and I actually share a parking lot!) so I was able to experience their sanctuary first hand!

Nana's Corner hosts custom built climbing and lounging area!
Unlike most of the rescue organizations I work with, Shadow Cats does very few adoptions. They focus primarily on offering a sanctuary to special needs cats. This ranges from the Cats of 'Cookie's Corner' who are Feline Leukemia positive to the Cats of 'The Outback' who have a variety of special needs or medical issues. Each cat at the sanctuary has a unique story and I was completely awestruck as Jacki (vice-president of Shadow Cats) gave me a private tour of their facility.

With 87 cats currently living in the sanctuary, I wasn't quite sure what to expect as I arrived. The Shadow Cats sanctuary is located in a quiet, calm neighborhood, which backs up to a beautiful wooded area, complete with a view of a quaint creek running right through the backyard. The Cats of 'The Outback' and 'Nana's Corner' are treated to a view of birds chirping and enjoying the numerous birdhouses and feeders setup on the property.

Our first stop on the tour was 'Nana's Corner', where I was promptly greeted by the handsome Wylie, featured above. It didn't take long for my legs to be surrounded by kitties waiting for a chin scratch or their turn to sniff the new visitor. As I looked around Nana's Corner, not only was I impressed with how happy and healthy each cat looked, but the amount of detail that went into their living environment. Custom made cat trees, cubbies to climb and hide in and fluffy beds were everywhere to be seen. The windows were lined with thick ledges for the kitties to climb and lounge on and several bowls filled with fresh, clean water and food lined the walls.
Billy, one of the many
Cats of The Outback!

Moving on to 'The Outback' - which can be viewed through a live-stream camera on Shadow Cats website - I was delighted to see a kitties paradise! The Outback is a wonderful outdoor, safely enclosed deck area, which houses some amazing kitties! This area was by far my favorite area of the sanctuary, I could have easily spent the afternoon here loving on the kitties of The Outback. In addition to the many ammenities that Nana's Corner offered, this area also offered an array of cat-walks that were craftfully installed all around the roof of the outback. The roof is made out of a sturdy wire and screen, offering the kitties lots of sunlight but also offering shade with the variety of ivy and plants growing. As she showed me around, Jacki also pointed out some of the amazing details of The Outback, including a HUGE covered area that extended under the entire length of Nana's Corner and the many 'houses' that are heated during the cooler winter months!

Louie and mom, Lilly enjoying each other's company!
After reluctantly leaving The Outback, I was treated to a visit to 'Cookie's Corner', which is home to several Feline Leukemia positive kitties, including the famous Louie, an adorable kitten who was rescued along with his beautiful mother, Lilly. The kitties of Cookie's Corner are housed in an indoor area (which you can also see on the Shadow Cats live-stream cameras). The kitties are treated to a view of a beautiful and very active bird feeder, offering endless entertainment to these sweet cats!

After my tour, I had the pleasure of spending some time in the main office chatting with Sheila, president of Shadow Cats and Jacki, vice-president. During our chat, I was so struck and impressed with the passion these two lovely ladies have for their rescue cats. We chatted about the sanctuary and it's beginnings as well as the many additional programs that Shadow Cats offers, including their TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program for feral communities as well as the 'One Life Fund' which offers funds to other rescue organizations that pull animals from kill-shelters in the area! I LOVE that Shadow Cats supports other area rescues that share the same mission!

All in all, I left Shadow Cats feeling inspired and completely pumped up about our upcoming fundraiser! Please be sure to check out my website starting November 1st and grab some limited edition kitty items to support this awesome rescue!
